The short answer: check the cleaning code on the couch's tag first. Vacuum it thoroughly, then spot clean marks with a small amount of water and mild detergent only if the code allows water, blotting and never soaking. Dry it quickly with a fan. A couch that has gone grey on the arms and headrests needs a deep clean.

This guide is for fabric couches, including microfibre, cotton, linen blends and polyester. Leather needs completely different care, and it isn't something we clean.
Step 1: Find the cleaning code
Most couches have a tag under a seat cushion or along the base with a cleaning code on it. It tells you what the fabric can safely take.
| Code | What it means |
|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaning is fine. You can use water and a mild detergent. |
| S | Solvent only. Water can leave rings or marks on this fabric. Don't use water at home. |
| W/S | Either water or solvent can be used. |
| X | Vacuum only. Anything more should be left to a professional. |
If there's no tag, treat the couch as if it were an S and test anything you use on a hidden spot, like the back of the base or under a cushion.
Step 2: Vacuum everything
Take the cushions off and vacuum the frame, the crevices and both sides of every cushion with the upholstery tool. Crumbs, grit and hair hide down the sides, and they grind into the fabric every time someone sits down. Vacuuming first also means you aren't turning dry dirt into mud when you spot clean.
Step 3: Spot clean marks (W and W/S fabrics)
- Mix a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid into a cup of lukewarm water.
- Dip a white microfibre cloth, wring it out until it's barely damp, and dab the mark from the outside in.
- Blot with a second cloth dampened in plain water to take the soap out, because soap left in fabric attracts dirt.
- Blot dry with a clean towel, then point a fan at the spot.
Clean the whole panel of fabric around the mark if you can. Cleaning one small spot on a grubby couch often leaves a clean patch that stands out more than the stain did.
Pet hair and smells
A damp rubber glove run across the fabric pulls pet hair into clumps you can pick up, and a lint roller finishes the job. For general stale smells, sprinkle bicarb soda over the seats, leave it for an hour or two, then vacuum it off thoroughly. Test it first on a dark fabric, because a little can stay in the weave.
Pet urine is different. It soaks through the fabric into the foam, so surface cleaning can make the top look fine while the smell keeps coming back. That's a job for a proper clean.
Mistakes that damage fabric couches
- Too much water. Soaking a cushion pushes dirt down into the foam, which then wicks back up as brown rings as it dries.
- Rubbing hard. It frays the fibres and spreads the mark. Always blot.
- Machine washing zip-off covers. Unless the maker says they're washable, covers can shrink and won't fit back on, or come out a different colour from the rest of the couch.
- Hair dryers and heaters. Direct heat can set stains and shrink some fabrics. Moving air from a fan dries the couch without the risk.
- Carpet spotters on upholstery. Some are too strong for delicate fabric. Use a product labelled for upholstery, and test it first.
When to get your couch professionally cleaned
Arms and headrests slowly go darker from body oils, hair products and hands. Spot cleaning won't lift that film, and it's usually the point people call us. Other good reasons are pet accidents, a couch bought second-hand, food and drink marks across the seats, or a new baby on the way.
One customer picked up a couch on Facebook Marketplace and had us steam clean it. In her words it was "in a disgusting state and now it's looking basically brand new!" Another had an older couch "that has had lots of stains and dogs lounging on it", and it came up near new.
How we clean fabric couches
We check the fabric and its cleaning code first. If the code rules out water, we'll tell you before we start and talk through the options. Otherwise we vacuum the whole couch and pre-treat the marks. Then we clean it with hot water and a fabric-safe detergent that breaks down the dirt, and extract it back out with a strong vacuum. We sanitise and deodorise where it's needed, and leave the couch damp to the touch. If a stain isn't going to come out completely, we tell you before we start. See our couch cleaning service for more.
